About Editara
A small independent tool for making one described change to one photograph. It is not a suite, a platform or a creative cloud, and it is not trying to become one.
What it is for
Most photo editing needs are small and occasional. A stranger in the background of a good holiday photo. A product on a cluttered table that needs a plain backdrop. A creased print of a grandparent. These are jobs of a few seconds that have historically required either a professional tool with a real learning curve or a subscription to something you will open twice.
Editara does that narrow thing: you describe the change in ordinary language and get a result in about fifteen seconds. The first 12 credits are free without an account, because a tool you have to sign up for before you can tell whether it works is asking for commitment in the wrong order.
How it pays for itself
Every generation costs real money to run, so the free tier is a real cost rather than a marketing line. It is paid for by the people who need more than a free account’s 12 credits a day and subscribe, which is the whole business model. There is no advertising, no data brokerage, and nothing else being collected in place of payment.
This is worth stating because “free” in this category usually means one of three things: a watermark on the output, an export paywall, or your data being the product. It is none of those here, and the honest reason is simply that the free allowance is small enough to be affordable.
What it deliberately does not do
No layers, no selection tools, no templates, no batch processing, no mobile app, no video. Those are real features and other tools do them well; adding them would mean becoming a different product and doing the narrow thing worse.
It also does not hold on to your photographs. Uploads are deleted at the end of the request that used them, and free results expire on a timer — 1 day anonymously, 7 days with an account — rather than living in a library. A subscription is the one thing that turns that into storage: paid results are kept for as long as you subscribe, and for 90 days after. On the free tier the timer costs convenience, and it is a deliberate trade.
On being honest about the model
Generative editing produces plausible images, not recovered ones. When a face is badly damaged, restoration invents a face. When a small photo is upscaled, the new detail is generated. When a black and white photo is colorized, the colours are inferred rather than found.
Every task page on this site says where its task fails, in specific terms, because a landing page that only lists strengths wastes the visit of everyone whose photo falls into the failure case. That is a commercial decision as much as an ethical one: the bounce is the same either way, and the honest version does not also produce a disappointed user.
