Why one instruction beats three sliders

The reason manual editing of a bad photo is frustrating is that the corrections fight. Raising brightness lifts the noise floor. Adding sharpness makes the noise crunchy. Pulling saturation back to compensate leaves skin looking grey.

Enhancement resolves them together. The model has seen enough well-exposed photographs to have an opinion about what this scene should look like, and moves everything toward that at once instead of applying independent corrections in sequence.

In practice this means a dim indoor phone photo comes back looking like it was taken in a better-lit room, rather than looking like a dim photo that has been brightened.

What improves most

Low light is the biggest win. Indoor evening photos, restaurants, parties — the cases where a phone sensor gives up and produces something dim and speckled. Noise is cleaned and detail that was buried in shadow comes back.

Flat lighting is the second. Overcast days and fluorescent offices produce photos with no contrast, and enhancement gives them shape without going harsh.

Slight softness improves reliably. Backlighting improves substantially — a subject silhouetted against a bright window is a case where the shadow detail is usually still in the file, and enhancement recovers it.

Choosing the right photo to enhance

Enhancement works from the detail that is in the file, so the photo you start from decides the ceiling. Slight softness from misfocus sharpens well. Motion blur does not — when the camera or subject moved, that detail was never captured, so pick a different frame if you have one.

Severe overexposure is the same story. Where an area is pure white, there is no information under it. The model will produce something, but it is generating rather than recovering.

Heavy compression artefacts — a photo saved and resaved through several messaging apps — can be smoothed, but the smoothing costs texture. Skin can end up looking waxy. Compare against the original before accepting.

Getting the result you want

Name the problem. "Brighten the shadows and reduce noise, keep the warm lighting" is better than a generic enhance, because a generic enhance also neutralises the warm lighting you may have wanted.

Say what to preserve. Enhancement tends toward a clean neutral look, so if the atmosphere is the point — candlelight, sunset, stage lighting — protect it explicitly.

Enhance once. Running an enhanced image through again is the fastest way to the over-processed look: plastic skin, halos around edges, colours that have drifted past natural.

Start from the best copy you have

Enhancement can only work with the information in the file you give it, so which copy you upload matters more than most people expect. The version that came off the camera or phone beats the version someone sent you, every time.

Photos that have travelled through a messaging app are the usual problem. Most of them recompress and downscale on the way, so the copy in your chat history may be a fraction of the size of the original and carry artefacts that were not in the shot. If the original still exists on the device that took it, go and get it.

Screenshots of photos are the same issue one step worse, because a screenshot captures the display version rather than the file. If you are enhancing a screenshot of an image, expect a ceiling on how good the result can be.

Where several near-identical frames exist — burst mode, or three attempts at the same group shot — enhance the sharpest one rather than the best-composed one. Composition is something you can crop toward afterwards; sharpness that was never captured cannot be added back honestly.

Can it fix a blurry photo?

Why does the skin look waxy?

Usually from enhancing an already-enhanced image, or from a heavily compressed source where smoothing the artefacts also removes skin texture. Enhance once, from the best original you have.

Is this the same as upscaling?

No. Enhancement fixes exposure, noise and softness at the current size. Upscaling raises the pixel dimensions. If a photo is both small and dim, enhance first and upscale second.

Does it work on a photo saved from a chat app?

It works, but the result has a lower ceiling. Most messaging apps recompress and shrink images in transit, so that copy carries artefacts the original did not. If the file still exists on the device that took it, enhance that one instead.
