The watermark is the whole question

Fotor Basic costs nothing and does not expire. It includes limited AI credits, one generation at a time, 512 MB of cloud storage — and watermarked JPG, PNG and PDF exports. Paid tiers remove the mark and add HD and transparent PNG output, more storage and access to additional models.

That makes the free tier a demonstration rather than a tool: it shows you the software works, and the payment is what converts the demonstration into a file you can use. It is not a way to finish a job.

Whether that matters depends on where the image is going, and it is almost always going somewhere. A listing, a profile, a print, a card — anywhere another person sees it, the mark is the only thing that matters.

Edits are never watermarked here

Upload a photo, change it, and the result comes back unmarked on every tier including anonymous free use. There is no trial window and no introductory allowance attached to that.

The reasoning is that an edit is your photograph rather than something the tool invented. Marking a picture of your own family differently from an image generated from nothing would be the wrong call, so they are treated differently.

The same photo, both ways

Take the concrete case: a dull, slightly dark photo that needs brightening and sharpening before it goes in a frame.

In Fotor the editing goes fine — adjust, preview, be satisfied. The wall is the last step: on the Basic tier the JPG, PNG or PDF you export carries a watermark, so the photo you framed is also an advertisement. The edit succeeded; the file did not. Removing the mark is what the paid tiers are for.

Here the same job is one sentence — brighten this and sharpen the detail — and about fifteen seconds. The download that appears is the finished file: full resolution, no mark, whether or not you have an account. The work is not a preview of a purchase, it is just done.

What a clean free file is worth

A watermark is not a small inconvenience, it is the difference between a finished job and a preview of one. An image with a mark across it cannot go on a listing, a profile, a print or a card — which is to say it cannot go anywhere another person will see it.

So the useful comparison is not how many free exports each tool allows, but how many of them you can actually use. Unlimited watermarked exports are worth roughly what none are worth, if the destination has an audience.

What the switch actually costs you

Nothing in output quality. The free file here is the same file a paying user gets for the same instruction — no reduced resolution, no mark, no held-back version.

Your results are not stored indefinitely, and that is deliberate rather than a limitation we are working around. Uploads are deleted at the end of the request that used them and result links expire on a timer, which is the whole reason we can promise the upload does not sit on a server afterwards. Download what you want to keep.

Commercial rights come with Pro and above and free output is for personal use. That distinction exists in some form at every vendor in this category, so it is worth reading rather than assuming.

Working out whether a free tier is enough

The question that decides this is not how many edits you get but whether the free output is usable output. Those are different questions and vendors tend to answer the first loudly and the second quietly.

A free tier with a watermark is generous on volume and useless on delivery: unlimited edits you cannot show anyone are worth about as much as none. A free tier with a small credit allowance and clean output is stingy on volume and complete on delivery — what you make, you can use.

So the honest test is to work backwards from the destination. If the image is going somewhere another person will see it, a watermarked tier is not a free tier for your purposes regardless of how many exports it allows.

And if you are only exploring, a handful of finished files tells you more about a tool than an unlimited supply of marked ones, because you find out what the output is actually like to use.

12 credits a day sounds small until you count what you actually needed last month. For most people the honest answer is one or two things, and the small daily allowance turns out to be the shape that fits.
